Well "required" is a hard word. But it certainly is helpful to have all 
info at one place - when was this tile last rendered ("ah, that's why 
the data looks different, the tile is two weeks old") and so on. Also, 
the ability of requesting the update of a certain tile right after you 
have uploaded your changes - without having to open the browser and find 
the right spot on ifw - can be an efficient tool. But of course nobody 
is forced to use it.
