[josm-dev] load geotiff via "Load WMS layer from file" (was: Plugins that depend on external libraries..)

An idea regarding loading geotiffs into josm:
wouldn't it be easier to write code to convert a geotiff (or any other
georeferenced image) to something the WMS-plugin can load with its "Load
WMS layer from file"-functionality (in the right-click-menu of any
WMS-layer in the layers-menu)?
i.e. don't try to do it with a plugin but with a helper-application that
is independent from josm (and can have as many depencies as necessary).

this is just an idea. sorry, I did not have time to look into it...
what do you think?
