By a powerful gift that that goes beyond guessing you are obviously
capable of (reading). Also, why should you expect that JOSM uses
modifier keys at all? I certainly didn't know when first using JOSM, I
found out in the wiki. You can keep U pressed, too, if that makes it
less awkward :).

What's your objection with the "ESC" or the "U" key? I believe
unselect also shows up in the keyboard settings, so you should be able
to place it to a better reachable key if you like.

Works fine for me. Can you please try if it works fine with U (maybe
it's a Java Version/Operating System issue?) and if not, open a bug
report.
