The problem that I have found with merging ways is that I have to  
resize the dialog that comes up to be able to refresh all the popup  
menus. I'm currently running on Mac OS X 10.6.1 and Java 1.6.0_15.  
JOSM version 2247. I've had a problem with a few recent JOSM versions  
too.
