I use it for 2 things as well:

1. display the slippy-map-grid in JOSM. I know no other way to see the
grid of tiles in JOSM.
2. For editing it is best turned-off, but for quickly zooming and
panning to the right place (orientation) it is quite fast. Then (once
found the right spot) you better turn it's layer to invisible.
