[josm-dev] Cardinal Directions Changes

Greetings!

I'm Jonathan Locke (OSS author and originator of Apache Wicket) and I am helping Martijn van Exel to implement some JOSM modifications for cardinal directions and I have a specific question I was hoping someone familiar with JOSM might be able to answer:

Could someone give me a list of classes and/or methods that would need to be changed to support this feature?

I can hopefully figure out how to make the appropriate changes on my own, but it would be super helpful to know where to focus/start as I'm concerned about misunderstanding or breaking things in such a large and complex codebase. I'd like to do a thorough, quality job.
