[josm-dev] Translation of Plugins

Hi JOSM developers!

I'm working on the plugin Areaselector and want to translate it to german. I tried to find out how exactly the translation works, but I was not really able to do so.

Vincent was so nice and generated the lang files for the project (https://github.com/JOSM/JOSM-areaselector), but I'd like to update the german language files. 

How are the steps to generate the language files and edit them?
1. generate base language files?
	I found in the build.xml the ant command "plugintrans", which extracts the message strings from the source. Is this the right way to do so?

2. edit .lang files?
	What format are the .lang files and how can I modify those?


A step by step guide would be great in the wiki.
