Here in Karlsruhe, Germany, it could be even easier as the city has
the copyright to their aerial photos (and they have licensed them to
Google). The problem is that granting such a license (which they'd
probably be willing to do, I do not see why not) would actually cost
them a fortune in man-hours spent understanding what I want from them
and assessing the (negligible) impact it has on their business model.
Seems like I'll have to dig out my old pilot's license and produce
some free imagery myself. Since Karlsruhe is already pretty complete
in OSM, I could then use existing OSM data to orthorectify the images
and start producing tiles for the OpenStreetMap aerial photography
layer ;-)
