and if you count both, one could split all ways in 2-node segments so that the same data becomes lots of features. ;-)
I agree that (significant) nodes are relevant and just counting ways does not fit with the concept. Significant nodes could be those that define an angle of more than 1-2 degrees compared to the previously counted node or that define an intersection (i.e. additional, otherwise unconnected nodes in a straight way would not count).
