Sure. Also, renderer-specific hacks could be introduced as follows:

way [highway=service][service=alley] .potlatch2-aerial-background { ... }
way [highway=service][service=alley] !.potlatch2-aerial-background { ... }

(Not sure if that's valid syntax, but you get what I mean).

In the meantime, I'm trying Komяpa's suggestion.
