I'm afraid there is not "one solution fits all" here. A bus stop in the
middle of a town shouldn't be rendered the same way as a bus stop in the
middle of nowhere...

If I remember well, that's about (without the implicit size) what we are
doing. Basically:
PixelPerM*proportional + fixed makes the proportional part expressed in
meters.

In the best of worlds, probably yes. But we have to take into account the
overhead of people being informed, upgrading to the latest version, having
the translators do their job and users having something to map as to be able
to test in real conditions.
I don't think that, even if we released at each new major feature, we could
reduce the freeze period to one day.

I don't know. I have seen Windows user lately on the list using only the
released versions (even the pre 0.11 in one case).
It would be very interesting to have some statistics but I have no idea on
how to collect them.
