Yes, definitely.

I played around by importing all waypoint or logpoint nodes from
a gpx file as "waypoint = yes" and then copying comments and
descriptions from this waypoint to tags. This way only the style
had to be extended to display a little marker and you could see
the points.

The problem I faced with this approach is that these tags are
"first-class". So these internal comments became uploaded
if the TrackPoint was used in a way.

Could we introduce something like internal or hidden tags? This
allow to encode waypoint/trackpoint metadata, but hide it from
the server.
