IMHO a difference between other MDI apps and a map editor is that with other
apps, when you say "new" you get a complete new document. For map editor, a
"new" document will always be another *view* to the same map.

When I zoom out in the gimp or in abiword, I would never expect to see
content from other document.

Different views to the map with one instance of merkaartor running could be
interesting if you want to compare stuff. I.e. when you tag a new town, you
might want to compare against a finished/better tagged area.
