Thanks -- copying the Projections.xml file solved the build problems
and I can run the latest now.

I realize now tha I can see the whole trace why the colors were
different -- it's coloring uphill and downhill differently. That's
very cool! I had missed that in the discussion of new features.

And the problems with zoom in and out are initially gone with the
latest SVN -- I can zoom out and still see the track.

I still have a problem with the track disappearing, though. I set
a background layer using the OpenTopoMap (very nice -- is that new?
I'd never noticed it before) and played with opacity since I had
trouble seeing the 1-pixel-wide track on top of the topo image ...
and the track disappeared. The only way I found to get it back
was restarting. And after restarting, I could make the track
disappear reliably by showing the background layer and then
doing anything with the track appearance in the preferences
window (e.g. if I tried to make it 3 pixels wide on hover instead
of just 1, the track would disappear, never to return).

But now I can't even get that far, because after a couple of
rounds of this, now on startup I'm getting a lot of errors like
this:

X Error: RenderBadGlyphSet (invalid GlyphSet parameter) 171
  Extension: 152 (RENDER)
  Minor opcode: 25 (RenderCompositeGlyphs32)
  Resource id: 0x0
(repeated hundreds of times on every mouseover) and it seems to
relate to fonts, because there's no longer any text visible in the
Merkaartor menus or toolbar buttons. Here's what the window looks
like now: http://shallowsky.com/tmp/merkaartor-ss.jpg

I can still run other qt/kde apps and text renders normally,
though most of them are probably using an older version of qt --
I had to get a newer version to build Merkaartor on Ubuntu 8.03,
though that may no longer apply on 8.10.
