Thanks.  Seeing the rc5 was available, I downloaded that and also installed
boost-dev and gdal-dev.  Assuming the addition of a stack of libraries which
came as dependencies of boost-dev would solve the boost issue, I ran qmake
and make.  Make appeared happy enough until
