To my opinion, it could also be snapping to 15,30,45,60,75,90, with
always the same modifier, since the user points at the desired
direction.
Please let the modifier be one of shift, ctrl or alt for comfort
and allow moving the node while snapping is activated.

Right, this may not be the ultra-perfect tool, but it is versatile and
very intuitive (almost every drawing program has this feature).

And maybe I havn't made that clear enough: It should also work for
closed polygons. In this case, there'd be one snap position (amongst
others) that would make both lines rectangular (which would not
necessarily mean that the angle at the node is 90 deg.)
