how big is "too big"? It is quite common for two GPS trails taken at
different times to differ by a substantial amount, especially if you had a
poor signal at the time.

Does your GPS give an indication of the number of satellites it's getting a
signal from?
In my experience you need at least 5 well spaced satellites before you can
start pointing the finger at other data, sources of error.
