Followed this advice, it worked. Thanks!
To answer the other questions: I had nothing selected, I used mouse
acrobatics (I'm a noob, remember?) :)
It's probably just something wrong with the interface between my seat and my
mouse that's causing all the problems...
Thanks a lot!

I tend to stick to creating ways of around 3 to 4 miles long. I then
select all the ways and tag them in 1 go.
As for tagging; I don't have any specific tips. But I have a print out
of the Map Features page
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Map_Features)
For a Road I tend to use something like
highway=motorway
name=The Name Of the Road
ref=Road Number
If sections are bridges over other roads or rivers, the make the bridge
a separate way and add the bridge=yes tag
You may also want to add access tags to describe access that may not be
obvious from the highway tag. For example I won't tend to label a
motorway with access tags to indicate that foot/bicycle/horse etc. are
not allowed.
However if I'm tagging a footpath that bicycles can access then I will
add bicycle=yes tag to indicate that bikes can use it even though it's
primarily a footpath...
Hope that make sense.
Cheers
Chris
