I've updated one or two roads as best I understand it (*) in that rough
area too, as it's close to home. I'm planning to get another GPS for
mapping the area at some point, but feel free to add in lots of detail
to save me the effort :) I'm fairly new to OSM, hence I've started out
by just editing my local data, although I'm using both potlatch and JOSM.
(*) ie how I understand I should use the various settings - my data is
based on driving / walking and reading the road signs, as opposed to me
guessing the data.
According to the wiki the UK settings for "highway" are as follows,
trunk is the primary trunk route, primary is the remaining A roads,
secondary is B roads, but what about a non-B road that more than just a
residential road, as it goes somewhere, but has houses on it - should it
be residential, or unclassified, or tertiary (not mentioned in the wiki)...?
eg Station Road from Henlow Camp towards Lower Stondon (shown as Upper
Stondon) on the map is a road that goes somewhere (Shillington, and onto
Barton-le-Clay (shown as Barton in the Clay) once the data gets added /
edited, but is neither an A, nor B road (according to the roadsigns)...
Some of the roads East of this area towards Stotfold, which has been
well mapped are listed as tertiary, which would seem correct, although I
note that Potlatch does not have a preset of tertiary, which seems strange.
So, I guess a non-B road that goes somewhere, and many of the roads in
Richard's URL (covering Shefford) should be re-classified as tertiary if
I understand things correctly (and the setting I've used for Station
Road - the update should hit tonight / tomorrow)...
Here's another question - should a roundabout (with junction=roundabout
set) also have oneway=yes set? In that same area, some roundabouts have
oneway=set, and some don't - what criteria should be used for choosing
whether or not to set "oneway"?
Thanks,
Steve
