[reposting Nick W's message to the newbies list, as this is probably
of general interest to anyone starting in OSM -- Richard]

Hello everyone,

Firstly thanks to all of you who turned up to what I think was a
successful weekend. I will put a GPX image up in the next couple of
days.

To those of you who are new to the project (Jodi, Ian, John) I need
to give you a bit of guidance to editing in JOSM as the way I
suggested you keep track of street names was by marking waypoints
(001, 002 etc).

You need to download JOSM with the waypoints plugin to take advantage
of this method of surveying. To do this I recommend you download from
free-map.org.uk.

1. Download JOSM from

http://www.free-map.org.uk/downloads/josm/josm-1.4-nw2.jar

2. Download the waypoints plugin from

http://www.free-map.org.uk/downloads/josm/waypoints.jar

3. Run JOSM, it will create a .josm file in your home directory (a
message will tell you precisely where it was created)

4. Quit JOSM again

5. Create a directory "plugins" within your .josm directory and copy
waypoints.jar to there.

6. Start JOSM again. Select "open" and load your GPX file in. Then
select "open waypoints file". Your waypoints will appear - they will
be auto converted to OSM notes.

7. Start editing! Ask me or the list if you run into problems.

Nick
