  Subject: [OSM-newbies] Coastlines & rivers

Hi, I was wondering what the best practice is for editing coastlines and rivers.

I have been fiddling with the coast on the east of Manila, and some of the rivers in the city.

Originally I was making them into one long way, but this caused so many problems when there was an error in the way, as josm kept complaining about incomplete ways when trying to edit.

Also, I believe (from reading the talk archives) that riverbanks should be labeled as such, and not coastlines, which the rivers in Manila are currently labelled as.

Also, I believe I should join the ways on both sides of a river, is this correct ?

If so does that mean the ways on both sides have to be the same length, as I have currently just split them up into arbitrary lengths.

  Cheers, Ian

As far as coastlines go I wouldn't make them into too long a way, particularly now that the API delivers a complete way if any part of that way is within a requested bounding box, otherwise you might find yourself downloading an area, and finding tens of kilometres of coastline imported at the same time. Maybe limit the way to a 2 - 5 km length?

These is a "proposed" map feature of waterway = riverbank which seems to be in widespread use despite its "proposed" status. For the river to render correctly in Osmarender, and hence the tiles at home layer, the two sides of the riverbank need to be part of the same way, with the end of each side being approximately opposite each other.

I have to admit to being unsure about the correct way to mark a wide river so that it displays correctly in the mapnik layer.
