[OSM-newbies] GPX tracing with NPE maps - calibration

I have been using the NPE gpx tracer http://gpx.npemap.org.uk/ to trace
rivers and railway lines. In spite of using the orthorectification
calibration tool, I find that the traces are significantly off track
compared with Landsat or my GPS. Am I missing something, or is NPE at best
only a guide? Is there any manual intervention I should be doing?
