No, they have a lot more and they can be accessed by web, posting as 
well as reading.  Not to mention that they allow discussions to be 
organized by thread.  I find them to be very useful myself.  Of 
course if there is a viable forum for OSM, then a Yahoo group would 
largely be duplication.  I was not aware of one.  Either way, a 
mailing list is much more conversational while a forum can be a good 
resource, especially for new users.
