[OSM-newbies] Download OSM data?

Hello Rick,

There are two ways to get the data:

1) Download the a planet file from planet.openstreetmap.org. This will
give you all of the data that was current as of the date of the file.
This is the way to go if you need data for a large area. It is also the
data that is used to render the default map on the main osm page.

2) Download from the API. This is how JOSM and Potlatch editors get their
data. It will give you the most current data, but only for a limited area
at a time. The details are on the wiki at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OSM_Protocol_Version_0.5

Best Regards,

Adam
