[OSM-newbies] Latest JOSM - auto extending way troubles

I'm struggling to create ways without them extending another way (if that
makes sense).

I'll create a way. Unselect it, then want to add a separate way to the end,
but when I create the first waylet (- what used to be a segment) of this way
it automatically highlights the other way & seems to become part of it. I've
tried ctl & shift clicking as I start, but it doesn't seem to help. Whats
going on?

I'm using a version 357 of JOSM dated 10th October.
