Look at the Bodensee (Lake Constance) for example:
   http://www.informationfreeway.org/?lat=47.61&lon=9.40&zoom=10
It is quite big, but it is one way with almost 900 segments. That works 
well with the editors and renderers.

As long as such huge lakes pose no problem, I like the idea of having 
only one way.
