[OSM-newbies] Areas of Conflicting Land Use

I want to map some areas for the footpaths, tracks and bridleways on the
local common. That's the relatively easy bit. The land is a mix of
overlapping areas (Common Land, Open Access Land, Private Land with
Permissive Access, Woodland, Heathland, Farm Land). Some of these areas are
also designated Nature Reserve.

Is it possible to show overall boundaries (fences, walls, other physical
boundaries) but differentiate within them between different types of land?
Further, is it possible to designate the different parcels of land as
belonging to a common entity; i.e.; "XYZ Common" and show that on the map?
Finally is is possible to show which parts of the land have been designated
"Nature Reserve". When I try to do this, the last area added blots out
previous areas laid down. Are there transparent layers, tints, that can be
used?

What's the best approach?

Thanks,
Ric
