[OSM-newbies] My fresh edits got distorted

Hello,

I edited some existing streets with Potlatch to make them look better. I
added a lot of points to curves to make them look smoother, etc. When I
went back to see my changes a few hours later, a large part of the
changes I made were distorted. The points had moved sideways so that the
smooth curves I made became slightly zigzag-like - not much, but enough
to make them look ugly. There are several separate ways that got
distorted. The distorted ones seem to be the last ones I edited. They
were OK when I finnished though.

I don't think the ways looked like they are now at any phase of the
editing process. All the nodes I added seem to be there, they just have
moved a little. This is frustrating, because I spent some two hours to
make these edits, and I tried to do the best work I could... sigh :-/
Any ideas what happened?
