I think that is quite common and inherent in the Garmin serial
connection. I guess that I have to reseat the connector on 1 in 4
attempts. I am so used to it that I just automatically check (usually
just push the connector right home - it is *very* stiff) if gpsbabel and
friends doesn't see any data.
