Having cleverly lost my old unit, I now have the same unit as you, I think.
Personally I don't use gpsbabel to get tracks; partly because my current
setup will NOT do it, g.o.k. why not, but anyway, I prefer to use the
USB feature (setup, interface, USB..) & take the daily track log off the
memory card that way. (I also use it to copy files from desktop-laptop
while I'm at it)
Garmin have a 'save' option within the tracks section, which is the one
to avoid; tracks written as-you-go to the micro-SD card are fine for OSM
use.
Having copied the file(s) across, I would delete old ones from the card
(via USB access) as they stay indefinitely else; and 'clear saved
tracks' does NOT remove them.
These daily files will be called eg 20080422.gpx (for today). You can
edit them, process them how you like, or just upload them as they come.
They will load into josm as-is, so I wouldn't bother editing if you're
not going to upload them..
Having loaded them in, you can zoom it /out to get the area of interest;
quite a good way to get the right area; then download the OSM data over
it, and start adding stuff.
