[OSM-newbies] osm data conversion

Hello,
 
I am looking for a simple tool that has instructions on how to convert osm data to kml or a shapefile.  Right now, I have tried osm2shp, but that utility does not create the features correctly.  Please help!
 
Also,
 
I am using windows xp not linux.
