I haven't tried the Windows binary, but I can heartily recommend
mapnik in general for raster-production (osmarender is the only option
if you want an svg output for further manipulation). If you need any
help then try either the mapnik-users or OSM dev mailing lists, but
you might find osmarender easier to get started with.

Some people prefer it, and you're likely to get a helpful response
both there and on the mailing lists.
