OK, lets do a postbox.
Select the node that represents the post box. Click "presets" and
select the postbox towards the bottom. The node will still be
selected. Look over to the right in the "Properties/Memberships"
window and you will see that there is now a line of information. The
key of "amenity" and the value of "postbox".
Thats it. No Icon gets attached in JOSM.
Upload the data to the server and wait for your postbox to show up on
the map as an Icon.

Does that get you a bit further?
