I think I know the cause.  The report said '0 points parsed ok. Do they all 
have lat,lng,alt,timestamp?'  I did realise that I had not got waypoints on 
that trace - my mistake in handling the garmin.  Since it was a small area I 
didn't think it would matter too much, but I realise now that without them 
essential information is missing.

It's not too important.  I've learned quite a lot this week.  I have a second 
trace downloaded from the garmin to hdd and this one does have good 
waypoints.  I'll upload it raw this morning.  If that works I'll know the 
reason.  I can re-do the short one after this.
