[OSM-newbies] Labelling Dual-Carriageways Correctly

Is there a right way to get dual-carriageway labels to render correctly?

If you look at this part of Bracknell [1] I see badly overlaid labels 
for the A329 and A3095 when viewing the Osmarender version but not the 
Mapnik version.  Is that simply because the Mapnik renderer is just 
smarter when it comes to placing labels or that the raw data should have 
been laid out better in some way?
