Ah, that question!

Not that I know of. I have sometimes recorded waypoints to show altitude 
as I walk, and have suggested that josm might pin an ele tag on if a 
node coincides with a gps point that has one, but it doesn't appear to 
be a priority. 20 years ago I'd have written the plugin to do this but 
I'm too rusty / don't have time now.. :(

It would be nice to have a plugin that looked for, say, the nearest 10 
points & took a weighted average altitude - but you then have issues 
around calibration (my Garmin can easily be 40metres out if the weather 
changes). I'd love something you could activate for a session, which did 
this for new nodes.
