[OSM-newbies] tagging subway lines

Is there a good (common) way to describe which subway lines one can access
through a particular station?  For example, I am looking at tagging a
station (more specifically, "railway=subway_entrance") in New York.  Its
name is "Clinton-Washington Avenues Station" but a rider accesses a subway
line called the G through it.  Is there a good tag for describing which line
a station is on?

The best I've come up with looking on the wiki, might be a Relation, Route,
over all of the stations on that line.

This really crucial for giving directions for a route that is partially
underground.  Any suggestions?
