[OSM-newbies] JOSM question...

In JOSM, is there a way to hide data, or move ways to a different
layer that I haven't found yet?

When working with large things that span miles and miles (like power
lines, rivers or interstates), it'd be nice to either hide all the
residential streets, or move them to another layer so they are harder
to see, or even not displayed at that point.
