[OSM-newbies] Josm now supports highway=path, but mapnik does not render it

Thanks for all the replies. Especially Christoph explaining why he added
it to josm.

I have always felt that footway was not really appropriate to rural
paths: the "map features" description always seemed very urban oriented.
But I guess that was because I was giving too much weight to the
necessarily specific example(s).

For now, at least, I will probably revert to footway for the area in
question. Which I might eventually regret if it becomes deprecated -)

Hope the servers get mended soon....
