[OSM-newbies] Tools & Utilities

Hello,

I've had good success using TrekBuddy (www.trekbuddy.net) for OSM
mapping on my Acer WM5 PDA running on the IBM J9 JVM. Some work is
required to set it up but it produces GPX files, can be set to log
tracks by time and/or distance + you can package OSM (and other) maps
for it.

Rather than letting the PDA go into standby (which you can turn off) I
find it better to use one of the utilities around that just turns off
the screen. I'm using tMan (http://pda.jasnapaka.com/tman/) although I
guess there are plenty of others.

I was also recommended to NoniGPSPlot by another OSMer but haven't got
around to trying it out yet.

I've tried a few other programs which didn't work for me:

- OSMTracker which didn't work properly on my PDA's VGA screen but might
work for you.
- BSGPSPDA which for some reason lags really badly on my PDA and isn't
usable.
- GPSMID for which you can compile OSM maps but for some reason I have
forgotten I couldn't get working.
