[OSM-newbies] JOSM preference set up

I’ve loaded the area in JOSM and most of the ways look to be
residential (which are a sort of light grey on my system) and the
interstate is tagged as motorway and shows as blue. Zooming in I’ve
found highway=track in green and highway=service in a thinner blue
line. Zooming in towards the top left finds a primary and a
secondary route in reddish and orangeish colours – the primary route
is the Pacific Coast Highway and pretty much follows a residential
tiger imported Pacific Coast Highway, so that looks like a bit of
duplication (if it helps Dana Point is near where I’m looking).

Coastline boundary just south of there is dark blue, with some
service ways on dockside and a red pier. All looks OK on my system
colourwise (I’ve never been to the area to verify the accuracy of
what I’m looking at datawise though <g>).

Hi Ed. The area I'm looking at is -117.718, 33.495:
-117.553,33.364. There is at least one segment of an interstate
going through the area. The majority of the lines are residential
and other lines include county and coastline boundaries. I don't
use any other data other than the OSM data layer and CaSIL's WMS
DOQQ as background.

It's a tiny section of California I am looking at but, eventually,
when my preferences is set up for easier viewing, I will be looking
at all of California. The primary goal for me is to get all the
major roads: interstates, US, state, county roads "cleaned up" to
use in the California basemap, a GIS service to the public. What I
mean my clean up is check that the highways are named, they follow
the course of the road according to the aerial imagery (DOQQs with
+/- 3 meter horizontal accuracy), remove duplicate road lines, etc.
I don't know if that will be a problem with the OSM organization but
we really like the look of the roads on the California basemap
compared to other roads we've used.
