[OSM-newbies] JOSM-file read error - invalid version 0

I am just new to JOSM. I did some editing by download+edit+upload before.
This weekend, though, I thought: well, I cannot write OSM, but I can download, edit, save a new layer and upload that later.

JOSM now denies reading the saved file.

Is there a solution? Can I tweak something in the file to make it load?
I tried JOSM 1529 (stable), which saved the new layer and 1504. Both deny to read the file.

Tweaking the '<osm version='null' generator='JOSM'>'
to 'version=0.6' works fine for me. Is it safe for OSM to do so?
