Great feature request - I've added it here:

This is definitely something we're looking at for Mapzen.  One of the goals
when we started was to make mapping more simple, more like playing a
computer game.  It doesn't make sense to a lot of people that a dual
carriageway has to be represented in OSM as two roads.  Having a present for
"Motorway" that adds both carriageways is more intuitive.  The problem
though is areas where there is only one motorway (or other separated road
lane).  In these cases it would have to be extremely clear to the user that
they were adding one carriageway or two.

I'll talk through this with the Mapzen dev team this week and see what we
can do around this.
