Have you tried --fixclosenodes option in osm2mp.pl?

mkgmap is the only alternative that I know of

http://www.osmaustralia.org/ and 
http://users.tpg.com.au/users/stevez/OSM/ have some garmin-ready maps to 
download. Not sure if they're routable.
