Thanks to all who replied

The render did, eventually, show a width to the river using the width= 
tag, unfortunately only in Osmarender.

The area I created to signify the wharf (Waterway=canal) shades fully in 
blue with Mapnik, but with Osmarender only the outline is shown. A bit 
annoying.
