[OSM-newbies] Saving work in JOSM

I am presented with a message box ' Disable plugin' when trying to upload my latest additions in JOSM that begins, "An unexpected exception occurred that may have come from the 'validator' plugin.".  I cannot circumvent this to upload the data, and I don't wish to lose the work I have done, obviously.  I have not saved data before and do not know how it works: what format do I save it in; how do I reopen it in a future JOSM session so that I am in the same position as I am now of trying to upload the data to OSM?  Help, please!
