If you are a bit of a geek, maybe a Nokia N810 would be a good choice. There 
are several kewl open source apps available:

Maemo Mapper is an excellent application, even providing 
turn-by-turn-directions (never used it BTW, as I use it on a bike). Caveat: 
Routes are caclulated on the server side beforehand, no live routing. Adding 
waypoints currently is broken.
