I've been mapping by taking photos since I started in 2005 so I can
thoroughly recommend it. There is a built in photo viewer for JOSM however I
personally think the optional AgPifoJ plug-in is superior, especially as it
doesn't eat memory. Once the plug-in is loaded simply select the "open
images with..." from the File menu.

You synchronise the time on the photos with the GPX. The easiest way to do
that is take a photograph of your GPS displaying the precise time.
Alternatively its pretty easy to set the Camera to GMT and as long as the
camera time is within a minute of the GPS time then you only need to adjust
the synchronisation of the photoset by +/- 60 seconds. Easy enough to then
sync manually once you have tried it a few times. The benefit of this latter
approach is that you don't need a photo of the GPS displaying the time.
