It does sound like you've put the wrong details into the app.
You should use the email address and password you used for the (main)
www.openstreetmap.org website, they're BOTH case sensitive.

Overwhelming? I personally find Merkaartor harder to use because it
tries to simplify things too much. Anyway, it's a matter of personal
preference, both are good to use (as well as the flash editor Potlatch
:)
