[OSM-newbies] Conversational gambit: New to OSM?

Hmmm probably did a google search on open source maps. Somewhere I saw an
announcement of a mapping party which led me to OSM.

I am a hiker and am interested in trails. I don't want to pay Garmin or
anyone hundreds of dollars for trails in US National Parks. Most local
trails are only available on the local jurisdiction website so information
is scattered. Mass imports have helped but sometimes information is out of
date.

For me style sheets and check lists would help. In my case I bookmark the
map features page which helps a lot but there are still times when I have no
idea how what I do will render.
